[Taiwan] Christians Respond to China’s Military Pressure with a Nationwide Prayer Movement

“You who put the LORD in remembrance, take no rest.”

Amid China’s ongoing military pressure against Taiwan, Taiwanese Christians are responding with an unprecedented nationwide prayer movement. According to CBN News, China intensified its pressure by releasing a simulated video in 2023 depicting an attack on Taiwan, while Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has been strengthening its military training and acquiring U.S.-made weapons in response.

In the midst of these rising military tensions, Christians across Taiwan have launched 24-hour relay prayers for revival, unity, repentance, and the protection of Taiwan. Brian Lu, pastor of Bread of Life Church in Taipei, shared, “We are witnessing a passion for unity and prayer across Taiwan like never before.”

This prayer movement has expanded beyond simple gatherings into a full-fledged nationwide spiritual movement. Known as RPG (Revival Prayer Group), small groups of two to three people gather daily in various places to pray. More than 40,000 RPG groups have already formed, involving around 200,000 participants. Organizers aim to establish 300,000 RPG groups, working in connection with underground churches in China.

Pastor Don Young, who served as a missionary in West Africa for 15 years, shared that in May 2021, God gave him a message that a “shaking” would come to Taiwan. He conveyed this to Taiwanese church leaders, and this sparked the prayer movement that has now spread nationwide.

Gordon Huang, pastor of Taipei 101 Church, warned that a war with China could break out and cause tremendous shock, emphasizing that Christians must be spiritually prepared. The prayer movement is also opening new pathways for evangelism and is marked by unprecedented unity across denominations and regions.

Peter Yang, leader of the Taiwan Christian Alliance, said he is witnessing churches uniting across denominational lines for the first time. “Every day and every week, pastors from different denominations gather to pray for the cities, the nation, and other nations. This is clearly the work of God. The legacy of this movement will be ‘unity,'” he said. Yang also noted, “Our goal is to form 300,000 RPG groups, and by partnering with Chinese churches, we hope to see leaders and believers on both sides pray together and even influence China.”(Source: Gospel Prayer Newspaper Edited)

I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth. (Isaiah 62:6-7,NIV)

God, we thank You for raising up Your watchmen in Taiwan, who pray without ceasing and give You no rest as the conflict between China and Taiwan enters a critical phase. As Your people kneel before You in the face of national crisis, reveal to them Your marvelous works of salvation, and grant boldness of faith to those living in these last days. Expand this alliance of prayer even further, that the LORD may be praised throughout Taiwan, China, and all nations. We look forward with hope to the day when You will bring revival to Your Kingdom and fulfill the completion of Your mission.
