Ch 9. Be Zealous and Repent

The Church of Laodicea

The Church of Laodicea was rich economically but extremely poor spiritually. They had settled comfortably into worldly wealth and ease, facing no persecution or oppression, which left their faith lukewarm and powerless.

‘Lukewarm’ here means “an attitude of pretending to be something they are not and behaving arrogantly.” The Laodiceans boasted about their wealth and claimed they lacked nothing, but they were blind to their true spiritual condition. They lived with indifference and disregard for God, salvation, and heaven.

Throughout church history, many churches have been like Laodicea: grand buildings and refined worship on the surface, but spiritually dead inside. Their worship stayed at the level of religious feeling, without true union with Jesus and His cross.

Church events became mere social gatherings. They neglected the poor, spoke of love and forgiveness only superficially, and eventually became known for fraud, quarrels, violence, division, lawsuits, hereditary leadership, and sexual immorality.

As a result, the Lord viewed them as so disgusting that He wanted to spit them out of His mouth. Though they bore the name of the church, they were in a state of deep shame and filth. Thus, the Lord warned them urgently to repent of their greedy idolatry and false religious pretense, and to return as true people of God.

1) Christ as the Head of the Church of Laodicea

“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.” (Revelation 3:14,NIV)

》Prayer Point

1. Jesus, who is the Amen, the faithful and true witness, and the ruler of God’s creation, became the ruler by dying on the cross to fulfill God’s will and plan for the church. How can a church loved by the Lord live in powerlessness? Let us pray, proclaiming the beauty and spiritual passion of a glorious church built up through Christ.

But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. (Hebrews 3:6,NIV)

2) The Church of Christ is a Victorious Church

Let us declare by faith that the church, as the body of the Lord, is victorious and cannot be defeated by the gates of hell.

》Scripture Prayer

Revelation 3:15–22(NIV)
15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.
20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.
22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

》Pray that the Word may become the Conclusion.

1. Let us thoroughly repent of living a life that focused on outward form and appearance more than loving God. Let us humbly acknowledge that we cannot ignite our own hearts or remove the blindness from our spiritual eyes. If we are a lukewarm church, trapped in mere religious emotions, the Lord rebukes us because He loves us. Let us pray that we and our church will come before God to buy refined gold and the white clothes of Christ’s righteousness. Let us stand before His Word like a healing salve for our blind spiritual eyes, so that a revival of life-giving repentance may break out like a fire.

2. The reality revealed by secular churches was a lie: claiming to love God while encouraging people to pursue worldly wealth and comfort as blessings. Because they were neither hot nor cold, God had no choice but to spit them out. Even now, the Lord stands outside the door of such hearts and calls out, “Be zealous and repent.” Let us pray that we will open the door when we hear His voice, welcome Him in, and that the Lord will sit as the head and master of the church. Let us pray to become faithful and true witnesses, saying “Amen” to every word of the Father, and loving the Lord with all our hearts.
