》 About Germany
Germany formed the Holy Roman Empire in the 10th century with the Germanic people at its core. In the 16th century, northern Germany became the center of the Reformation. In 1806, the empire was dissolved during the Napoleonic Wars, and the region split into various principalities and city-states. In 1871, Prussia led the formation of the German Empire, making it a major power in Central Europe. After losing World War I, the Weimar Republic was founded in 1918. In 1933, Hitler’s Nazi regime started World War II. After Germany’s defeat in 1945, it was divided and ruled by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. In 1949, it was split into West Germany and East Germany. In the 1970s, West Germany’s Ostpolitik eased tensions with East Germany, leading to economic exchanges. In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, and the communist regime in East Germany collapsed, leading to reunification in 1990. After reunification, Germany invested heavily to raise productivity and wages in the East to match Western standards. Germany is a core member of the European Union and is expanding its political and economic influence. Angela Merkel served as Chancellor from 2005 to 2021. Olaf Scholz has been serving as Chancellor since 2021.
Since the 1950s, Germany has achieved what is known as the “Miracle on the Rhine.” It became a model country in economic growth, employment, price stability, and fiscal management. It is the fifth-largest economy in the world and the largest in Europe. It is a major exporter of machinery, automobiles, chemicals, and household goods. It benefits greatly from a highly skilled workforce. However, like other Western countries, it faces demographic challenges for long-term growth. Low birth rates, high net migration, and rising numbers of refugees are putting pressure on the social welfare system. Structural reform is needed. While the economy showed signs of recovery through domestic demand, labor market improvement, Brexit resolution, and easing U.S.–China trade tensions, it was hit hard again by the effects of COVID-19.
Germany’s GDP per capita is approximately $50,900.
》 Scripture Focus
| Revelation 1:1–7(NIV) 1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. 4 John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. 7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen. |
》 Prayer Points
1. Germany has a rich history as the birthplace of Protestantism through the Reformation. In the 1960s, 97% of West Germans were Christians, but now that number has dropped to 65%. Evangelicals make up less than 2% of the population, around 1.6 million people. Church attendance is low across all denominations, and many leave the church to avoid paying church taxes, leading to church closures. The spiritual decline is due to the loss of biblical authority and evangelical faith, the rise of liberal theology from humanism and the Enlightenment, and growing secularism. Let us pray that the church will repent of unbelief and secularism and be renewed by the gospel message, “The righteous will live by faith,” and enjoy peace with God through Jesus Christ.
2.Many young people are participating in events like Christival, Jesus Family, and Teenstreet. SMD/IFES runs over 150 student groups in universities and schools. Agape (CCCI) and Navigators work on campuses, and Children’s Evangelism Movement(KEB) reaches children across Germany. Let us pray that the gospel of Jesus, who saved us by His blood, spreads across Germany. Let us pray for spiritual renewal in grace and truth, and for revival to come again. Let us pray for those in eastern Germany, still shaped by atheism, and in western areas where the gospel was never fully received. May evangelical churches be planted even in towns where none yet exist.
3. In April 2024 Germany partially legalized recreational marijuana, allowing adults to possess and grow up to 25 grams. In November the Gender Self Determination Act came into effect, permitting individuals and even children with parental consent to change their registered gender without court approval. Although presented as a matter of human rights these laws continue to raise deep concerns for the safety of women and children. Let us pray that the people of Germany, deceived into believing that drugs and feelings can redefine life and identity, may turn to the blessed path of those who hear and keep God’s Word. Let us also pray that God’s grace will restore them to holiness.
