》 About Germany

Christianity in Germany spread across Western Europe between the 4th and 6th centuries following the conversion of Clovis I, king of the Franks, to Catholicism. In the 8th century, the missionary Boniface established church structures in central and northern Germany, and with the founding of the Holy Roman Empire in the 10th century, Catholicism became the center of politics and culture. In the 16th century, Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation in Wittenberg, making northern Germany a stronghold of Lutheranism while southern and western regions retained their Catholic traditions. The Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century deepened divisions between Catholics and Protestants, but the Peace of Westphalia granted local rulers the right to determine their territory’s religion. In the 19th century, Prussia established the Prussian Union Church, merging Lutheran and Reformed traditions. In the 20th century, during the Nazi regime, some churches cooperated with the state while others resisted through the Confessing Church movement. After World War II, East Germany enforced an atheist state policy that restricted church activities, while West Germany guaranteed religious freedom. Since reunification in 1990, secularization has advanced rapidly in the former East, leaving Germany today with around 25% Catholic, 22% Lutheran or Protestant, and more than half identifying as non-religious or other. Despite this, the church tax system remains in place, and both Lutheranism and Catholicism continue to exert significant influence on German culture and society.

》 Scripture Focus

Romans 5:1–5(NIV)
1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with GOD through our LORD JESUS CHRIST,
2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of GOD.
3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
5 And hope does not put us to shame, because GOD’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the HOLY SPIRIT, who has been given to us.

》 Prayer Points

1. The number of missionaries from evangelical churches has steadily increased over the past 30 years. The Association of Evangelical Missions (AEM) includes over 90 organizations and has sent more than 3,700 missionaries. Other groups include DMG, VDM, Pentecostal and Charismatic unions, Love Mission, Wiedenest, Diguna, Logos, OM, WEC, Wycliffe (WBT), and Kontakmission. Let us pray that German churches and mission groups respond to God’s call and joyfully commit their lives as missionaries. Let us pray that they boldly share the gospel, following Jesus Christ who made us a kingdom and priests. Let us pray that they live with hope in the Lord’s return.

2. The German Protestant Church (EKD) was founded by Lutherans, Reformed, and United Protestants, but it continues to decline and is deeply divided. Still, a pietistic movement is rising within the EKD, and evangelicals are working together through the Evangelical Alliance in prayer, cooperation, social outreach, and mission. Believers are forming prayer groups and uniting regionally to seek spiritual renewal. Let us pray for wisdom and strength in united ministries so they may bear the fruit of salvation. May the faith of believers continue through faith in Jesus Christ. Though the German church may be weak, let us pray it moves forward with confidence, believing that Christ died for the ungodly.

3. Over 100 million refugees exist globally, and Germany is one of the main host countries. In 2019, 1.34 million foreigners entered Germany, and 940,000 were forced to leave. Since 2015, 1.8 million refugees have been accepted. Germany is home to 21.3 million foreigners, which is a significant portion of the population in many cities. There are over 5 million Muslims in Germany, with about 3 million being Turks and Kurds. More than 12 mission organizations like OM, WEC, and World Venture are sharing the gospel with them. Although conversions are increasing, some face threats such as honor killings. The gospel must reaches Muslims from North Africa, Bosnia, Iran, and other nations. Nearly 4,000 to 5,000 Muslims come to Christ, while over 1,000 Germans convert to Islam. Let us pray that German churches and mission groups boldly share the gospel and serve immigrants and refugees in love.
