》 About France
France has gone through many changes in government, including the Hundred Years’ War with England (1337–1453), the French Revolution in 1789, and Napoleon’s coup in 1804. These events led to shifts between monarchy, empire, and eventually today’s republic. Since the Middle Ages, France has remained a leading country in Europe. Today, it is a key leader in the European Union (EU) and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. France is known for its influential writers, philosophers, and theologians, and it is a global cultural power with famous architecture, art, fashion, and cuisine. It is a presidential republic, and Emmanuel Macron has served as president since 2017.
France is one of the world’s top economies, with strong development across manufacturing, agriculture, and services. Its major industries include automobiles, aerospace, steel, chemicals, electronics, and farming. Finance, tourism, and IT are also key sectors. As an EU member, France is active in international trade. Main exports include aircraft, cars, pharmaceuticals, and chemical products. Since 2020, COVID-19 has caused a major economic crisis, leading to higher unemployment. France is working to overcome high national debt, income inequality, and regional gaps through reform and innovation.
France’s GDP per capita is approximately $46,184.
》 Scripture Focus
| Isaiah 11:9-16(NIV) 9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. 10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. 11 In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the Mediterranean. 12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth. 13 Ephraim’s jealousy will vanish, and Judah’s enemies will be destroyed; Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim. 14 They will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia to the west; together they will plunder the people to the east; they will subdue Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will be subject to them. 15 The LORD will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea; with a scorching wind he will sweep his hand over the Euphrates River; he will break it up into seven streams so that anyone can cross over in sandals. 16 There will be a highway for the remnant of his people that is left from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from Egypt. |
》 Prayer Points
1. France has been traditionally Catholic, but the faith has declined rapidly over recent decades. Today, 25% of the population identifies as non-religious and 8.6% as Muslim. Most Catholics are nominal, and fewer than 10% attend mass regularly. Many have become secular and even reject religion, seeking freedom from church and faith itself. As Catholicism declines, both traditionalist and charismatic Christians are becoming more active. The Alpha Course is spreading quickly, especially among nominal Catholics. Let us pray that these people will hear the gospel of the cross, come to faith, and be saved. May the Lord stretch out His hand again, and may the remnant throughout France return to Him.
2. French youth are facing an identity crisis and searching deeply for life’s meaning. Youth unemployment is over 20%, and both youth crime and suicide rates are high. Ministries like AEE serve children through gospel clubs, Bible camps, and more. Youth-focused ministries such as Teen Mission, YWAM, Young Life, and TEAM are active, as well as Teen Challenge, which supports those recovering from addiction. Movements like Mission Radical, ON AIR, Alive-3, and Teen Street are also reaching non-Christian teens.
Let us pray that every effort to harm the next generation through emptiness, sin, and confusion will be broken. Through these ministries, may Jesus Christ and the gospel of the cross be clearly seen, and may God’s glory and truth fill the hearts of the youth across France.
3. France is one of Europe’s most multi-ethnic and multicultural nations, welcoming many immigrants and refugees. It has the largest Muslim population in Western Europe, including groups like the Maghrebis from North Africa, Berbers from Algeria, and West African peoples like the Bambara, Wolof, Malinke, and Soninke. Many live in poor urban areas and face high crime, unemployment, and lack of education. Few Muslims convert to Christianity, while over 150,000 French citizens have converted to Islam through marriage. Mission organizations such as WEC, OM, IMB, and CCCI work through friendship evangelism, films, Scripture distribution, and literature. Those who have come to Christ from Islam are becoming powerful witnesses in their communities. France also has the third-largest Jewish community in the world with 450,000 people. About 77% do not attend synagogue, and several hundred are Messianic Jews. Let us pray that the Lord, who gathers the scattered, will allow all minorities in France to hear the gospel of the cross, believe, and be saved.
