》 About Switzerland

Switzerland began in 1291 as a defensive alliance of three small states and secured independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499. It was formally recognized as an independent country in 1648 through the Peace of Westphalia, and in 1815, its permanent neutrality was guaranteed by major powers after the Napoleonic Wars. Under the Federal Constitution of 1848, Switzerland became a federal republic with 26 cantons. The executive power is shared by a seven-member Federal Council. The president serves symbolically and is chosen among the council members for a one-year rotating term. Real executive power lies with the seven members of the Federal Council, who each serve a four-year term. Switzerland maintains a centrist stance in international affairs, with its foreign policy based on neutrality and universalism. It actively participates in mediating international conflicts and attends Non-Aligned Movement meetings as an observer. Although it remained outside the UN for a long time, it officially joined in 2002. As a federal republic under the Swiss-style collegial system, Switzerland is currently led by Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter, who began her one-year term in 2025.

Switzerland has one of the highest standards of living in the world. With few natural resources, its economy relies heavily on importing raw materials for processing and export, making it sensitive to international—especially EU—economic shifts. The country’s geography, rich in Alpine landscapes and lakes, supports a strong tourism and hydropower sector. It has grown into a highly developed industrial nation focused on machinery, chemicals, metals, and pharmaceuticals. Its stable political and economic system has enabled its banking sector to flourish, making Switzerland a global financial hub.
Switzerland’s GDP per capita is approximately $103,669.

》 Scripture Focus

Isaiah 44:1-9(NIV)
1 “But now listen, Jacob, my servant, Israel, whom I have chosen.”
2 “This is what the LORD says—he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.”
3 “For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
4 “They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.”
5 “Some will say, ‘I belong to the LORD’; others will call themselves by the name of Jacob; still others will write on their hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and will take the name Israel.”
6 “This is what the LORD says—Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.”
7 “Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come—yes, let them foretell what will come.”
8 “Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”
9 All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless; those who would speak up for them are blind—they are ignorant, to their own shame.

》 Prayer Points

1. Though great reformers like Calvin and Zwingli once preached in Switzerland, today most people neither understand nor care about Christianity. Catholicism has declined significantly. The Swiss Evangelical Alliance, Free Churches, and other ministries are embracing a renewed vision for national evangelism.
Let us pray that the Church in Switzerland will be filled with the Holy Spirit and awakened to hear the voice of the Lord who still speaks today. May it boldly testify that there is no God but the Lord in the midst of a culture marked by apathy, wealth, comfort, and vague spirituality. Let us also pray that churches will reach youth increasingly drawn to mysticism and Eastern religions, helping them see the emptiness of idols and turn to Jesus Christ.

2. The Swiss evangelical community may be small, but its steady commitment to world missions is a true blessing. The Evangelical Missionary Association (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Evangelischer Missionen, AEM), founded in 1972, collaborates with Free Churches to strengthen global evangelism. Through 45 mission agencies, nearly 1,500 long-term missionaries have been sent out.
We pray that through these missionaries, God’s living water will be brought to spiritually dry places and that the blessings of the gospel will flow to the nations. May the Church in Switzerland continue to dream of growing like a tree planted by streams of water and raise up more dedicated workers to prepare the way for the Lord’s return.

3. Switzerland’s German-, French-, and Italian-speaking regions remain heavily influenced by Catholic tradition, and evangelical gatherings are rare. Meanwhile, the non-religious population is rapidly growing, along with Islam and other religions. But only God is the beginning and the end of salvation. Let us trust Him to raise up those who will boldly declare, “I belong to the Lord.”
Switzerland is also home to people from over 100 different nations. Among them, Latino and African communities have planted more than 200 churches and are actively sharing the gospel. Still, many other minority groups remain largely unreached. Let us pray that churches and mission organizations will increase their commitment to these communities. And may all who have been created and chosen by God come to know His grace through Christ—and give Him praise together.
