》 About Slovakia

Slovakia began as the Moravian Empire in 833 and remained under Hungarian rule for nearly 1,000 years. After World War I and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it became part of Czechoslovakia in 1918. Though it declared independence in 1939, it quickly came under German control. In 1945, after Germany’s defeat, the Communists rose to power, holding control until the peaceful Velvet Revolution in 1989. In 1993, Slovakia peacefully separated from the Czech Republic, in what is known as the Velvet Split. The country joined NATO and the EU in 2004 and the eurozone in 2009. It is a parliamentary republic with President Peter Pellegrini(since 2024) and Prime Minister Robert Fico(since 2023).

Since reforms in 1998, Slovakia’s economy has grown steadily, driven by foreign investment, ties with Western Europe, low unemployment, and increased net exports. Key industries include automobile and electronics manufacturing. Challenges remain, such as a shortage of skilled labor, ongoing corruption, and a slow shift toward innovation. The energy sector faces high costs and unpredictable regulations. Slovakia’s GDP per capita is approximately $26,147.

》 Scripture Focus

Ezekiel 34:11–13, 23–26(NIV)
11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.
12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.
13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.
23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.
24 I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the LORD have spoken.”
25 “I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of savage beasts so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety.
26 I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.

》 Prayer Points

1. Catholicism, the state religion, accounts for 78% of the population. Many local churches still hold early morning prayer meetings, and believers are respected for their faith. However, because clergy are paid by the government, they often align with state policies and lack spiritual independence and zeal. Nominalism is widespread across Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed churches, and attendance is declining. Protestants make up 11% of the population, with evangelicals around 1.5%, or about 80,000. Though small in number, movements like the Slovak Evangelical Alliance and Natural Church Development are reigniting passion for church planting. Let us pray that the church will exalt Jesus Christ, the covenant of peace, and hold fast to that covenant to be renewed. May the Lord pour out showers of blessing and bring revival to Slovakia.

2. Ministries such as International Messengers, CCCI, MTW, and ABWE are working with foreign missionaries across Slovakia. Churches and mission agencies are partnering for regional development, and groups like SIET(Slovak Initiative of Evangelical Teams), IN(International Needs) Network, and Integra Ventures are active in cultural outreach, prison ministry, and addiction recovery. There is a growing need for more missionaries and leaders for evangelism, church planting, and discipleship. We give thanks for the Apostolic Church (AoG) sending missionaries abroad. The Lord, our Shepherd, seeks the lost and leads them to His mountain to feed them with the word of peace. Let us pray that missionaries and believers will be filled with His heart and go into the darkness to rescue lost souls.

3. For youth ministry, SIET operates a nationwide network, working with various denominations, including Lutherans, and using programs like Josiah Venture for evangelism and training. CCCI and IFES also serve students through a three-phase campus discipleship model. Hungarians, the largest minority at 8%, face tension over rights and language—let us pray for peaceful resolution. Though mostly Catholic, there are a few evangelical churches among them. Over 140,000 Roma (Gypsies) face deep poverty and social exclusion, but they remain highly responsive to the gospel—more than in any other Central or Eastern European nation. Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd for Slovak youth, Hungarians, and Roma. Let us pray that churches will reach out and share the gospel, so they too may experience the abundance of life in Christ.
