》 About the UK
The official name of the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly abbreviated as the UK. England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland were long independent nations, but in 1707, England united with Scotland and Wales, and in 1800, Ireland joined to form a single kingdom. In the 18th century, it expanded overseas to create the British Empire, and the Industrial Revolution brought rapid economic growth. Under Queen Victoria, it controlled vast territories including North America, India, Africa, and Oceania, earning the name “the empire on which the sun never sets.” After the World Wars, the empire weakened, and in 1922, Ireland gained independence, leaving only Northern Ireland in the UK by 1927. The UK joined the EU in 1973 but officially left in 2021 through Brexit. Charles III became king in 2022, and Keir Starmer has served as Prime Minister since 2024.
The UK is a trading power and global financial center, with the second-largest economy in Europe after Germany. Over 80% of GDP comes from services, especially finance, with London ranked as the world’s second-largest financial hub. The aerospace industry is also the world’s second-largest, and the pharmaceutical sector ranks tenth globally. Agriculture is highly mechanized and intensive, producing about 60% of the nation’s food with just 2% of the labor force. The economy slowed down in recent years due to Brexit, and the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown caused further decline.
The UK’s GDP per capita is approximately $52,636.
》 Scripture Focus
| Isaiah 1:18–21, 24–27(NIV) 18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” 19 “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land;” 20 “but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. 21 See how the faithful city has become a prostitute! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her—but now murderers! 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: “Ah! I will vent my wrath on my foes and avenge myself on my enemies.” 25 “I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities.” 26 “I will restore your leaders as in days of old, your rulers as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.” 27 Zion will be delivered with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness. |
》 Prayer Points
1. Britain needs new purpose and direction in the 21st century after Brexit, COVID-19, economic crisis, government corruption, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. National identity weakened after the British Empire and continues to fragment. Once rooted in Christianity, the nation now promotes minority religions like Islam and spreads astrology, New Age, occult, and paganism. The Christian population in England and Wales has declined sharply, and the “freedom” of the 1960s led to widespread addiction, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, abortion, prostitution, homosexuality, gambling, and personal debt. Britain needs a national awakening. For 800 years, revival came nearly every century, the last being 1859–1869. Let us pray for Christians to face their sin, turn from doubt and materialism, and find true revival in the gospel of Christ.
2. England is the most populous and secular part of the UK. Only about 6% of Christians attend church regularly, most treat faith as abstract and shift toward atheism. Cities are rife with drugs and crime, and many churches have closed or turned into mosques, Hindu or Sikh temples. While London has many large churches, charismatic networks and ethnic minority churches representing over 50 countries are also very active. Notably, around 60% of churchgoers belong to ethnic minority groups. Northern Ireland has long had tension between Catholic Irish and Protestant Scots, and although peace was reached in 1998, conflict remains. It was the last part of the UK to ban abortion due to Christian influence, but it was legalized in 2019. Let us pray that God will cleanse England and Northern Ireland with Christ’s blood and fill the land with justice and righteousness.
3. Scotland’s national church is Presbyterian, but membership has dropped steeply, and most people no longer attend. Liberal theology and nominalism dominate. Social issues include illegitimacy, addiction, loss of chapels, and the disappearance of Christian schools. The evangelization rate is about 3%, and same-sex marriage is now legal. Though it experienced revival in the 1950s and hosted the 1910 Edinburgh Mission Conference, only evangelical churches are seeing small growth today. Let us pray for a return to biblical roots and the radical faith of early Scottish martyrs. Wales experienced several revivals, the last in 1904. Now, attendance is down to 7%, many churches have closed, fewer than 25 people attend most churches, and only 3.5% are under 30. After embracing the social gospel, churches became empty and people spiritually hardened. Let us pray that Scotland and Wales will again be restored by God’s grace and be called a city of righteousness and faithful town.
