》 About Israel
The history of Israel began about 4,000 years ago when the Israelites (Hebrews) migrated from Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan (modern-day Palestine), which is recorded in the Old Testament. By the 19th century, growing persecution of Jews in Eastern Europe and Russia led to the rise of Zionism—the belief that Jews needed to return to their ancestral homeland, Palestine, to establish a nation and escape oppression. After World War I, Jews began migrating to British-controlled Palestine. This migration accelerated dramatically following the Holocaust during World War II. In 1948, with support from the United Nations, the State of Israel was established. Since then, the region has witnessed six major wars. In 1964, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) was formed to reclaim lost territory. Yasser Arafat became its chairman in 1969 and led its resistance until the Oslo Accords in 1993, which created the Palestinian Authority governing Gaza and the West Bank. Israel operates under a parliamentary system. Benjamin Netanyahu of the Likud party has served as Prime Minister for a total of over fifteen years, leading the country through repeated attacks by groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, while also dealing with uprisings (intifadas) and ongoing tensions with Iran.
Israel has a high-tech, free-market economy. Its top exports include polished diamonds, advanced technology equipment, and pharmaceuticals. Key imports consist of oil, grain, raw materials, and military hardware. While Israel often runs a trade deficit, this is offset by strong revenue from tourism, services, and foreign investment. The discovery of large natural gas fields in the Mediterranean has significantly improved its energy outlook. However, the country faces issues such as income inequality, high housing and consumer prices, and economic slowdowns—especially intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Israel’s GDP per capita is approximately $53,111.
》 Scripture Focus
| Romans 10:11-18(NIV) 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” 16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did:“Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” |
》 Prayer Points
1. Christianity in Israel is composed of roughly 80% Arabs, 12% foreigners (such as Egyptians, Ethiopians, Greeks, Russians, and Armenians), and 8% Jews. Each group has grown through immigration and conversion. However, the church is divided—both ethnically and denominationally—with over 20 Protestant and independent church denominations and more than 100 missionary organizations. Still, there is hope for unity through the National Evangelical Committee, which fosters cooperation between Jewish and Arab believers. Let us pray that churches will unite in faith in the cross of Jesus Christ and boldly share the gospel with the Jewish people, who have shown a growing interest in recent years. May many in Israel call on the name of Jesus and be saved.
2. After the establishment of Israel in the land of Palestine under the banner of Zionism, the nation has long experienced conflict with neighboring Middle Eastern countries. In October 2023, a large-scale attack by Hamas escalated the war, which continued until a ceasefire was reached on October 10, 2025, ending two years of warfare. However, tensions still remain. Ongoing violence and threats have resulted in the deaths of many civilians on both sides. Political peace seems far off, as both parties strongly assert their own claims and remain deeply divided. The conflict has also intensified tensions between Jews and Muslims around the world. Let us pray that those who claim to walk in the light will recognize their sin in hating their brothers for personal gain. May they hear the gospel of grace—the good news that, while we were united with sin and in rebellion against God, Jesus Christ gave His life to bring us peace. Let us pray that reconciliation with God will lead to an end of division and that people will be united in love
3. The ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews, who make up ten percent of the population, hold tightly to legalism and are especially resistant to the gospel. Messianic Jews, many of whom are immigrants from the former Soviet Union and Poland, tend to be more open to the message but still need to be reached. Let us also pray for the Druze, who make up about one and a half percent of Israel’s population and live throughout the Arabic-speaking eastern Mediterranean region. Pray that the word of Christ will be clearly preached to all these communities. May they hear and respond with genuine faith and become a people who carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.
