“Those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars.”
Matthew Grech, a former gay rights activist in Malta, is currently facing criminal prosecution for publicly sharing his testimony about leaving a homosexual lifestyle and embracing the Christian faith, according to a recent report by FaithWire. On the 16th, Grech appeared once again before a Maltese court, where he could face up to five months in prison and a fine for allegedly “advertising” what is referred to as “conversion therapy.” A final verdict is expected in October.
The case originated from an interview with the local media outlet PM News Malta, in which Grech shared how he left the LGBTQ lifestyle after encountering Jesus. During the interview, he also referenced a Christian organization while responding to a question regarding Malta’s ban on conversion practices.
In 2016, Malta became the first country in the European Union to outlaw any attempts to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, imposing penalties for violations. Grech was indicted after three citizens filed complaints, and to date, he has appeared in court for this case 12 times.
Ahead of the latest hearing, Grech commented, “This trial marks the final oral arguments. It’s been a very long journey.” He expressed grave concerns that freedom of expression is under threat in Malta, noting that fundamental rights are being undermined. He emphasized that the outcome of this case could set a major precedent for both freedom of speech and religion.
Despite the legal and societal costs, Grech continues to share his testimony and faith on social media. “The people of Malta are praying for me, but being prosecuted for my faith is not right,” he said. “Even so, I rejoice in the midst of persecution — because Jesus is worth it.”
Grech also criticized the Maltese media for avoiding coverage of the case. “The broadcasters and press are afraid, and only one side of the story is being told. But Malta deserves to hear both sides,” he asserted. He added, “If I had known there was a way out of homosexuality when I was younger, I would have chosen it. I never wanted to be a victim of unwanted sexual desires.”
Grech previously lived an openly homosexual lifestyle in London and was heavily involved in New Age practices and Reiki, a spiritual healing technique that originated in Japan. However, after visiting a church, he was deeply moved by the love of God and decided to repent and surrender his life to Jesus. “Reading Paul’s teachings allowed the truth to pierce my heart,” he shared. “Repenting and giving my life to Jesus was the most blessed decision I have ever made.”(Source: Evangelical Prayer Newspaper,Edited version)
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”(Daniel 12:3,NIV)
God, please rebuke the unjust law that seeks to hinder Matthew Grech, condemning as illegal his testimony of turning from a homosexual lifestyle after encountering the Gospel and joyfully choosing to follow the truth. Grant him victory after this long legal battle. May his confession of life—brought forth by the light that freed him from the works of darkness—resound in the hearts of those still chasing the fleeting pleasures of the flesh. Let the lives of those restored by the Gospel become wisdom that leads many to righteousness, so that the souls in Malta, burdened by sin, may be clothed in new life and dwell in the glory of the Gospel.
