[DRC] ADF Militants Pose as Church Leaders, Kill Three in DRC

“In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us.”

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), armed fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) disguised themselves as priests and choir members to launch a deadly attack on civilians. They killed three people and abducted at least eight, according to International Christian Concern.

On the morning of August 13, suspected ADF rebels raided a church in Ngite village, stealing clerical and choir robes and posing as a religious delegation. Later that evening, around 7:05 p.m., they arrived in Mayi Moya village. Believing them to be genuine church representatives, villagers welcomed them warmly. Some even joined in singing with the group, unaware they were being led into captivity.

The militants later struck in Kitsanga, on the outskirts of Mayi Moya, where they opened fire and killed three men. They looted shops and homes and set a boutique on fire.

Survivor Jean-Philip Mboosa recalled, “They came with smiles and songs, so we thought they were truly a church delegation. But when I saw guns hidden beneath their robes, I knew we had been deceived. My heart sank. I quietly slipped away and ran into the forest, praying God would protect me.”

Mary Kavora, a relative of one of the victims, wept as she explained, “Who would doubt people dressed in holy robes? My cousin followed them while singing praises but never returned. It feels as if our very faith betrayed us.”

This latest attack comes amid renewed rebel activity in the Bambuba-Kisiki region, heightening fear among residents. Local leaders are calling for stronger military presence and improved security systems to protect communities.

Despite the grief, local clergy declared their faith unshaken, “They may have stolen our garments and shed our blood, but they cannot steal our faith. We will gather again for worship. Even in the valley of death, God is with us.”(Source: Gospel Prayer Newspaper, Edited Version)

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:35, 37,NIV)

God, with sorrow we come before You because of the terrible acts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where rebels disguised themselves as priests and choir members to attack villages, killing and kidnapping innocent people. Please stop their evil works and turn them back from the way of destruction. Protect and set free the eight who were taken, and let the grieving families find strength and victory through Your love. May the church, though deeply wounded by trials and persecution, boldly declare victory in Christ so that every power of the enemy is broken and peace may come to this land.
