[Yemen] Christians Declare, “I Want to Be a Walking Bible” Despite Severe Persecution

“Now I commit you to Godand to the word of his grace”

Christian persecution is intensifying again in Yemen. As reports continue to emerge of arrests and disappearances of Christians in areas controlled by Houthi rebels, Open Doors shared the story of Majed, a Yemeni Christian, and asked for focused prayer. The underground church in Yemen faces some of the harshest persecution in the world. Decades of civil war and the presence of extremist groups have left believers under constant threat.

“My colleagues have been kidnapped one after another by extremists, and I feel my turn may come soon,” Majed said. “Every knock on the door makes me freeze. Every moment feels like punishment.” He added, “Reality settles in slowly but firmly. When I sense that I’m about to be taken, thoughts rush in. Every word I’ve said and every choice I’ve made plays back in my mind. Waiting for what’s coming is its own kind of suffering.”

Even so, Majed holds to his calling rather than fear. Knowing his arrest may be close, he has been focusing on memorizing Scripture. “Wherever they take me, I want to be able to share Jesus. I want to become a walking Bible,” he said.

Although he could flee to a safer region, Majed has chosen to stay. “I could run, but others need help,” he said. “If everyone leaves, who will remain to share the love of Jesus?” He continues to pray for his family and friends and hopes to be a source of comfort and peace to them.

In Houthi-controlled areas, it’s common for detainees to disappear for weeks or months with no information. Many endure repeated interrogation and torture, and their whereabouts are often unknown. “Even right now, the brothers I served with may be under questioning,” Majed said with deep concern.

Despite the fear, his faith remains firm. “Jesus said we would face suffering in this world, but He promised victory. That is our hope,” he said. He expressed gratitude to believers around the world who are praying for them. “Prayer strengthens us,” he emphasized. Majed ended with a plea: “Yemen needs light. May God lead those who are suffering onto a bright path.”

Open Doors asked believers to pray that God would use Majed both inside and outside prison, that prisoners and their families would receive comfort and encouragement, that the church in Yemen would be protected from further harm, that wounded hearts would be healed, and that disciples would not abandon their ministry out of fear.(Scource : Christian Today, Edited Version)

“Now I commit you to Godand to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritanceamong all those who are sanctified.(Acts 20:32,NIV)

God, please bless the Yemeni church, including believers like Majed, who prepare for coming suffering and entrust their lives to you as they memorize Scripture and pray so they can share Jesus wherever they go. We lift upto you those whom you have made holy and your gracious word. Shine the light of your glory into their hearts, strengthen their faith, and help them stand as a church that endures and overcomes persecution. May the love and peace of the cross, through which you gave your Son, rest on all of Yemen. Wipe away the tears of those suffering and groaning in the civil war, and grant true freedom to all who long to live in your truth.
