[Uganda] Evangelist’s murder sparks widespread grief in Uganda

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me;

An evangelist who had participated in a public Christian-Muslim dialogue in Uganda earlier this month was killed by Islamic extremists, according to sources. Morning Star News identified the victim as Konkona Kasimu, 42, a convert from Islam who was well known for his deep knowledge of both the Bible and the Quran. He had taken part in Christian-Muslim dialogues in several areas, including Iganga, Mayuge, Jinja, and Kampala.

Kasimu’s church, New Eden Church, organized an open-air public dialogue in Busia, eastern Uganda, from December 8 to 12. A four-member evangelistic team—three men and one woman—was sent to the event. Kasimu served as the lead speaker, while the other team members focused on counseling and discipling new believers, church leaders said.

On the final day of the event, tensions rose after several Muslims publicly converted to Christianity. Concerned for Kasimu’s safety, local Christians sheltered him briefly. Later that evening, the evangelistic team decided to travel to Iganga.

At around 6:30 p.m. on December 12, the team departed on two motorcycles. Kasimu rode with team member Recheal Kyakuwa, while the other two members traveled on a separate motorcycle. As they passed through the Nakalama swamp area, four men dressed in Islamic attire stopped them.

Kyakuwa, who survived the attack and was hospitalized for her injuries, said the team initially believed the men were seeking help. One of the attackers suddenly identified Kasimu as the evangelist who had participated in the Busia dialogue and struck him on the head. Kyakuwa was also assaulted and lost consciousness, while the other motorcycle carrying two team members managed to escape.

Kasimu later died from his injuries. News of his death brought deep shock and grief to Christian communities in eastern Uganda. Church leaders described the incident as a targeted attack linked to his evangelistic ministry.

“Kasimu was killed for advancing the Kingdom of God,” said Pastor Jeremiah Kasowe of New Eden Church in Iganga. “He was a man deeply knowledgeable in both the Quran and the Bible, and he used that knowledge to witness Christ to many.” Police were investigating the incident at the time of reporting but had not released an official statement.

Morning Star News noted that this attack is one of many documented cases of Christian persecution in Uganda. While Uganda’s constitution and laws guarantee religious freedom—including the right to convert and openly share one’s faith—Muslims make up less than 12 percent of the population and are largely concentrated in the eastern regions of the country.(Source :  Morningstar News, Edited Version)

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. (Acts 20:24, NIV)

God, we thank You for granting Uganda witnesses like Kasimu, who did not regard his own life as precious but shared the truth with Muslims in order to fulfill the mission he received from the Lord Jesus. Even in the face of attacks by those who envy and seek to hinder the powerful spread of the gospel of Your grace, may the church, the body of Christ, not shrink back in fear but rely on You with bold faith. May the word of truth proclaimed through them resound in the hearts of all who hear, leading them to repent and turn back, and to receive the true blessing of Your Kingdom coming upon their lives.
