An Italian court has recognized three legal parents for a four-year-old child in a landmark ruling, according to a Reuters report cited by News1 on May 13. The child was born in Germany and has been raised by two men in a same-sex marriage, one of whom is the child’s biological father. The biological father had the child with a female friend, while the other man, an Italian-German citizen, legally adopted the child under German law. The couple later sought recognition of the adoption in Italy, but local authorities rejected the request on suspicion that the child had been born through an overseas surrogacy arrangement. However, in January, the Bari Court of Appeal overturned the earlier decision, ruling that “there was no surrogacy agreement” and officially recognized the adoption. As a result of the ruling, the child now legally has three parents, including the biological parents and the adoptive parent. Pasqua Manfredi, the lawyer representing the family, stated, “All three individuals wanted to be recognized as the child’s parents, and the court acknowledged this.” The ruling comes ten years after Italy passed its “civil unions” law, which guarantees certain legal rights to same-sex couples. Meanwhile, the Catholic advocacy group “Pro Vita & Famiglia” condemned the decision, arguing that it undermines the order of family law and exposes minors to social and ideological experimentation.(Source: Gospel Prayer News)
