Controversy is growing in Switzerland’s Lucerne region following the approval of assisted suicide in hospitals and nursing homes, according to a May 19 report by LifeNews.
The proposal was introduced by parliamentarian Sarah Muff, who argued that individuals should be allowed to choose assisted suicide regardless of where they live or receive medical treatment, citing the principle of “self-determination.” The measure passed with 87 votes in favor and 27 against.
The decision follows similar developments in Zurich, where nursing homes were previously required to permit assisted suicide. Comparable policies are now spreading to other regions across Switzerland.
Critics warn that the expanding practice is changing the role of hospitals and care facilities, raising concerns that such institutions could shift from places dedicated to treatment and care into places where death is offered as an option. Others argue that the policy undermines the medical profession’s fundamental duty to protect and preserve life.

God, we pray for Switzerland as assisted suicide continues to spread in hospitals and nursing homes. Have mercy on those who have turned away from what is good, and reveal Your truth to hearts that believe human life belongs solely to themselves. Teach them to fear You and to recognize that life is in Your hands alone. At a time when the value of life and human dignity is fading, let the Gospel bring renewal to Switzerland once again. Turn hearts toward life, hope, and Your truth. May the people of that nation become a blessed people who honor and praise You throughout the years You have given them.
