Uganda’s military chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, ordered the suspension of operations at NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor, two major news outlets owned by Nation Media Group, Yonhap News reported on June 29, citing Bloomberg.
Following the order, troops were deployed to Nation Media Group headquarters in the capital, Kampala, and the broadcaster and newspaper were forced to halt operations after their power supply was cut.
Kainerugaba, whose father, President Museveni, has been in power since 1986, has said he “does not believe in a free press,” arguing that “the media should be run by cadres of the revolution.”
Kainerugaba, who has openly expressed his intention to succeed his father, has drawn criticism over social media posts threatening opposition figures.
Nation Media Group has been in conflict with the government for years. Last year, its journalists were barred from covering the president and parliament. God, we ask You to rebuke the leaders of Uganda who seek to strengthen their power by suppressing freedom of the press through military force and cutting off electricity to silence the media. Your Word says, “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” We confess that no government can silence the truth forever, and that every lie used to conceal the truth and exalt human authority will ultimately come to nothing. May the church boldly proclaim Jesus Christ, who is the Truth, and faithfully lift up the nation in prayer. May Your kingdom, where righteousness and justice reign, come upon this land, so that every tongue may praise You as the one true King.
