A total of 47 people were arrested in Iraq as part of a large-scale crackdown targeting political figures following a corruption investigation, Newsis reported on June 29, citing the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The investigation was launched based on the testimony of former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili, who was arrested last month. Lawmakers whose parliamentary immunity had been lifted were also included in the investigation.
Iraqi security forces sealed off Baghdad’s Green Zone before carrying out the operation. Those arrested included 12 sitting members of parliament, one former lawmaker, one former adviser to the prime minister, and one senior Oil Ministry official, among a total of 15 high-profile suspects.
Diaa Jaafar, an investigative judge at Iraq’s Central Anti-Corruption Court, said the investigation found evidence that some political figures had improperly used state resources to finance election campaigns and secure government contracts for personal gain.
Jaafar also said that Parliament Speaker Haibet al-Halbousi had approved the lifting of parliamentary immunity for the lawmakers involved, allowing arrest warrants to be carried out.
