President Lee Jae Myung’s recent remarks on abortion medication drew criticism from the Korea Association of Christian Churches (KACC), which called for the immediate withdrawal of his comments. According to Kidok Ilbo, the organization issued a statement on July 16, strongly condemning the president’s remarks. It said that suggesting the use of abortion medication be left to doctors’ conscience and discretion is “a highly dangerous statement that abandons the state’s duty to protect human life,” and called for the remarks to be withdrawn immediately. Earlier, during a Cabinet meeting on July 14, Lee instructed the government to review measures that would allow women to safely use abortion medication, including giving doctors the discretion to prescribe the drug even before the necessary legal framework is in place. The KACC argued that a fetus is an independent human life that deserves protection from the moment of conception, and that leaving the use of abortion medication to a doctor’s discretion undermines the right to life. The organization also stressed that, amid South Korea’s declining birthrate, the government should take the lead in protecting human life rather than expanding access to abortion. God, have mercy on South Korea as the legalization of abortion pills seems to be drawing ever closer. You alone are the Lord and Giver of life. Turn this nation away from the sin of believing that human life can be ended at the conscience and discretion of a doctor. Restore the fear of the Lord in this land. While there is still no proper legal framework or safeguards to protect unborn lives, stop every attempt to leave abortion to a doctor’s discretion under the pretext of addressing overseas purchases of abortion pills. Awaken Your Church to stand watch and cry out to You. As You formed us in our mothers’ wombs and care for us, let the grace of the gospel be passed on to South Korea and to the next generation.
