Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, 81, has declared that the country will no longer hold elections, prompting the Panamanian government to recall its ambassador to Nicaragua and drawing strong condemnation from the United States, according to Yonhap News on July 22.
In a statement issued on July 21, Panama’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had recalled its ambassador to Nicaragua in protest of the Nicaraguan government’s actions undermining democracy. The ministry stressed that free and transparent elections are essential to preserving democracy and said it strongly rejected President Ortega’s public remarks.
Speaking on July 19 during a ceremony marking the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Popular Revolution, Ortega claimed that opposition figures were seeking to conspire through elections and organize political parties. He then declared that Nicaragua would no longer hold elections.
Responding to Ortega’s announcement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that Ortega and Co-President Rosario Murillo had abandoned even the most basic pretense of governing with the consent of the people. God, we ask You to rebuke the Nicaraguan government for clinging to power. Bring its leaders to repentance and turn their hearts back to You. As Your Word declares, may they put away violence and oppression and do what is just and right. Remember the people of Nicaragua who groan under dictatorship and have been deprived of their freedom. Deliver them from the hands of the oppressor, and lead them into the true freedom found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. May the people of Nicaragua come under the lordship of Christ, the true King, and rise as a holy people who seek His kingdom above all else.
