Brazil 2
April 10th

“Brazil’s joy was very great when they understood the words of the law!”
On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated it like this. And their joy was very great. (Nehemiah 8:13, 17)

》 About Brazil

Brazil began to be colonized in 1500 and gained independence from Portugal in 1822. After a period of monarchy, the country became a republic in 1889, and the first democratic elections in 1950 led to a presidential system. General Branco, who led a coup in 1964, established a military dictatorship and promoted industrialization with pro-American and anti-communist policies. In 1985, a multiparty democracy was restored, and in 2019, Jair Boussonar became president. Since 2020, the country has been hit hard by COVID-19, ranking third in the world for most cases and deaths.

Brazil economy is the eighth largest in the world but is recovering after suffering the worst recession in its history since 2015. Brazil is one of the world’s largest exporter of sugar, coffee, and oranges, and the country is rich in resources such as gold, silver, chromium, diamonds, iron ore, and natural gas. Forest resources are also abundant, producing 600,000 tonnes of timber a year, but farmers are poor and of small-scale, and ecosystem degradation is severe. Brazil’s GDP per capita is approximately $14,100.

》 Scripture Focus

Nehemiah 8:13-18(NIV)
13 On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law.
14 They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month
15 and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.
16 So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.
17 The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated it like this. And their joy was very great.
18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly.

》 Prayer Points

1. There are several mission organisations in Brazil, including Baptist Mid-Missions (BMM), New Tribes Mission (NTM), Christian Churches (CC), Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE), Youth With A Mission (YWAM), Brazilian Gospel Fellowship (BGF) and Crossworld. Let’s pray that these organisations and missionaries will serve with the heart and love of the Lord and raise up leaders. Pray for ministries that prepare and send out local church leaders as missionaries, and for the wider mission work in the Amazon region.
In 2016, it was reported that 70,000 missionaries were sent out by Brazilian churches to spread the gospel abroad. Let’s pray that God will give joy to the missionaries who are obeying His Word and going to different countries. May they be equipped daily with the message of the Gospel to lead lost souls to the Lord.

2. The number of refugees has increased significantly. Since the “national exodus” crisis in Venezuela in 2019, around 240,000 Venezuelan refugees have settled in Brazil as of 2020. More than 10,000 of them are children, and at least 400 crossed the border alone. In January 2020, Brazil’s National Commission for Refugees granted refugee status to more than 21,400 Venezuelans. In addition, refugees from Haiti and Cuba continue to arrive in northern Brazil. In response, the International Red Cross is planning to expand its refugee reception facilities from 13 to 17.
Let’s pray for the government and aid agencies to implement a friendly policy towards refugees. Let’s also pray that the Brazilian churches will help and serve the refugees so that the Gospel can be shared. May the refugees who come to Brazil in search of a home discover that, even if they live in temporary shelters, they have an eternal heavenly home and can regain eternal joy.

3. We must protect girls and women. In Brazil, at least four young women are sexually assaulted every hour. Research shows that the police receive reports of violence against women every two minutes. The number of women killed simply because they are women increased by 4% compared to last year. Most victims were killed because of their gender, and 88% of attackers were current or former partners of the victims. In cases of rape, 54% of victims were girls aged 13 or under. A Brazilian prosecutor said: “Brazil remains one of the most dangerous places in the world, and the most dangerous place for women is their own home”.
Let’s pray for the protection of vulnerable girls and women from sexual assault, violence and murder. Pray that the majority of the Brazilian population, who are Christians, will understand the Word of the Lord. May they find freedom from being slaves to Satan, who leads them to murder out of lust and hatred, by believing in the cross of the Gospel.
