》 About Greenland

Greenland was first settled by the .Danes in 1721 when missionary Hans Egede established a trading post and a Lutheran mission in the capital, Nuuk. In 1953, the Danish government introduced the ‘G60 policy’ which marked the transition of Greenland from a colonial territory to becoming a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. By 1979, Greenland was granted home rule, and in 2009, it gained extensive autonomy, except in areas like foreign policy, military, and defense. Greenland remains a Danish territory and functions as a parliamentary democracy. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is the head of state, and the prime minister, elected by the parliament for a four-year term, leads the government. The current prime minister, Múte Bourup Egede, has been in office since 2021.

Greenland’s economy heavily relies on the export of shrimp and fish, alongside subsidies from the Danish government. Fisheries account for over 90% of the country’s exports, making the economy vulnerable to price fluctuations in these commodities. Additionally, government subsidies comprise more than 50% of Greenland’s revenue and contribute to 25% of its GDP. The territory faces significant challenges, including a limited labor force, geographical dispersion, lack of industrial diversification, long-term sustainability of public budgets, and population decline due to emigration. Moreover, hydrocarbon exploration has been halted due to falling oil prices. Greenland’s GDP per capita is approximately $41,800.

》 Scripture Focus

Jeremiah 3:22-25(NIV)
22. “Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding.” “Yes, we will come to you, for you are the LORD our God.
23. Surely the idolatrous commotion on the hills and mountains is a deception; surely in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
24. From our youth shameful gods have consumed the fruits of our fathers’ labor– their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.
25. Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our fathers; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the LORD our God.”

》 Prayer Points

1. Greenland has a rich Christian history, but the church has grown cold because of modernization and a focus on material things. Let’s pray for the church in Greenland. We ask God to help them remember Him and turn away from their wrong ways. May they confess, “Salvation truly belongs to our God, the Lord.” Pray that they will restore their relationship with the Lord and rise in faith, not just based on old Christian culture but through a new life in Christ, who died and rose again. Let’s pray that they may be a church that truly worships God.

2. Greenland is a tough place to live, and its culture has suffered from modernization. Because of this, there are many problems, like high rates of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, mental illness, and suicide. Many people need emotional and spiritual healing to overcome their pain. Thankfully, some local believers, missionaries, and short-term workers are helping through counseling and healing work. More people are being strengthen by the Holy Spirit’s help. Let’s pray that these workers can continue to serve well and that those who get help may become part of and rooted in a strong faith community.

3. More churches are being started among the Inuit people in Greenland. White missionaries and Inuit Christian leaders are sharing the gospel in a way that fits their culture. Let’s pray that the gospel reaches the hard-to-reach coastal and remote areas, so everyone can know that the Lord is God. Pray for the Inuit people to come back to the Lord and be fully restored to God’s image. May they obey God’s word and glorify the Gospel.
