》 About Togo
Togo was recognized as a German colony in 1885, but after World War I in 1914, it was divided between British and French control. In 1960, Togo gained independence from France and became the Togolese Republic. After independence, the country experienced repeated military coups. In 1969, Eyadéma came to power and ruled as a dictator for 38 years until his death in 2005. After his death, the military backed his son, Faure Nassingbé, which triggered violent protests and caused around 40,000 people to flee the country. In 2020, Faure was re-elected for a third term amid allegations of election fraud. Togo joined the Commonwealth in 2022.
Togo’s economy struggles with widespread poverty. Many people, especially orphans and children, are vulnerable to exploitation and human trafficking. Over 60% of the population works in agriculture, mainly producing cotton, cocoa, and coffee for export. Cement and phosphoric acid production also help support the economy. Togo has rich natural resources, including the world’s largest reserves of phosphate and ranks fifth globally in phosphate production.
Togo’s GDP per capita is approximately $923.
》 Scripture Focus
| Deuteronomy 6:1–5(NIV) 1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your GOD directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your GOD as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the GOD of your ancestors, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our GOD, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your GOD with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. |
》 Prayer Points
1. Since 1990, evangelical and Pentecostal churches in Togo have seen rapid growth. Let us pray that as churches multiply, solid gospel teaching, discipleship, and leaders with a strong biblical worldview will also be raised up. In a nation where over 45% identify as Christians, let us pray that the Church will reflect Christ’s body through unity and love, not division and rivalry. Many believers still engage in spirit worship and voodoo rituals, and false teachings are widespread. Let us pray that Christians will fully turn from darkness, stand firm in the truth, and not be swayed by materialism or deception. May Togo, after years of dictatorship, listen to the voice of the one true God, obey His word, and receive eternal life.
2. With over 58% of the population under age 24, and growing freedom of religion since 1992, youth and children’s ministries have expanded rapidly. Groups like CCCI and IFES are active on university campuses, and SU is serving through schools, homes, and AIDS prevention programs. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will use these ministries to plant knowledge and the fear of God deep in the hearts of the next generation. Let us pray that mission organizations will work together with local churches. Many of these churches are not yet equipped for youth ministry, but together they can guide young people on the right path.
3. Idolatry remains deeply rooted in Togo. Let us pray that the gospel will break through hardened hearts, especially among resistant tribes like the Ewe and Fon. Meanwhile, Islam is gaining influence through financial support in commerce, education, and charity from oil-rich Islamic nations. Let us pray that before the hearts of the Togolese are swayed by idolatry or material gain, the gospel of Jesus Christ, the one and only Savior, will be boldly proclaimed. May many come to know, fear, and follow Him, and may faithful witnesses rise up to bring salvation to this land.
