》 About Luxembourg

Luxembourg was founded in 963 as a principality by Count Siegfried and was ruled by the Duke of Burgundy from 1443 until 1815. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna elevated it to a grand duchy and granted independence, but it remained under influence as the Dutch king also became Grand Duke and Prussian troops were stationed there. In 1890, when the Dutch king died without an heir, Luxembourg gained its own royal family. It gave up its status as a permanently neutral country in 1948, joined the Benelux Customs Union the same year, and NATO in 1949. Today, Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The Grand Duke serves as head of state and appoints the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Grand Duke Henri has held office since 2000, and Luc Frieden has served as Prime Minister since 2023.

Luxembourg’s economy is marked by low inflation and unemployment, stable and steady growth fueled by technological innovation, and a high-income labor market. With a strong talent pool and a favorable tax system for investment and fund management, many European branches of global companies like Amazon, PayPal, Skype, and eBay are based in Luxembourg. Its well-developed transport infrastructure enhances its strategic position at the heart of the European Union, becoming a key driver of economic growth. Based on GDP per capita, Luxembourg is the fifth richest country in the world. Luxembourg’s GDP per capita is approximately $137,516.

》 Scripture Focus

Titus 2:6–8, 11–14 (NIV)
6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.
7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good; in your teaching show integrity, seriousness
8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.
12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

》 Prayer Points

1. Christians make up about 80% of Luxembourg’s population, with 73% identifying as Catholic—a number that continues to decline. Most people claim to be Catholic, but secularism, materialism, and individualism are widespread. Many are nominal believers, and Mary worship plays a large role in traditional religious customs. Protestants make up 4.2% of the population, mainly foreigners, and evangelicals are a small minority at about 1%. Meanwhile, non-religious and Muslim populations are on the rise. Evangelicals are often seen as a “fanatic group,” and both the government and the public are resistant to home visits and street evangelism. Let us pray that the church in Luxembourg will be renewed by the gospel of the cross, which redeems and purifies. And may the people of God reject worldly desires and live with self-control, righteousness, and godliness, eager to do good until the day of Christ’s return.

2. There are about 10 foreign-language churches in Luxembourg, but only a few have full-time pastors. The Korean church was established in 1996 and is actively sharing the gospel with both Koreans and people of other nationalities. Missionaries are needed to support both foreign and local churches so they can become Christ-centered communities, grounded in the message of the cross according to the Bible. They are also needed to help believers teach others as they were taught. Let us pray that these churches will gather in worship and prayer for the spiritual renewal of Luxembourg, and that real unity will be established. Pray that the churches will proclaim the gospel with the heart and wisdom of the Lord, be examples of good works and lead many to the truth through the power of the gospel.

3. Roughly half of Luxembourg’s population are foreigners—many of them live in nearby countries and commute for work, business, or EU-related affairs. These people often live for wealth, comfort, pleasure, and reputation, and show little interest in spiritual matters. Muslim immigrants from the Balkans and Arabs from the Middle East are passionate in their Islamic faith. Although Luxembourgish is widely spoken as a native language, only the New Testament has been translated so far; the Old Testament is still needed. Let us pray that the full Bible will soon be available in Luxembourgish so that people can hear God’s Word in a language that speaks to their hearts. And let us pray that believers who know God’s grace through Jesus Christ will carry a clear vision to share the gospel strategically with all the nations living in this land.
