》 About Australia
Dutch navigators first reached Australia in 1606 and named it New Holland, but they did not settle. In 1770, Captain James Cook charted the east coast and claimed it for Britain, naming it New South Wales. After the American Revolution in 1776, Britain began sending convicts to Australia, using it as a penal colony. More than 150,000 convicts were transported. In the mid-1800s, new colonies were established and gradually given self-government. In 1901, Australia became a federation. Full sovereignty from Britain was achieved in 1931. Indigenous Australians experienced violence and discrimination from colonization onward and still face racism today. In 1813, settlers discovered fertile plains west of Sydney, which led to a boom in wool production and economic growth. Immigration increased and gold discoveries attracted people from around the world. Australia is a constitutional monarchy with the British monarch as head of state. Anthony Albanese became Prime Minister in 2022 and was re-elected for another five-year term in 2025.
Australia has a developed market economy with balanced sectors in services, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. It is one of the world’s top exporters of natural resources, energy, and food. It leads in coal and uranium exports and has major reserves of iron, copper, gold, natural gas, and renewable energy.
Australia’s GDP per capita is approximately $64,407.
》 Scripture Focus
| Isaiah 62:1–5(NIV) 1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. 2 The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. 3 You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD’s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married. 5 As a young man marries a young woman, so will your Builder marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. |
》 Prayer Points
1. There has been a major shift in Australia’s religious landscape. The percentage of Christians continues to decline, while the number of people with no religion has surged to 38.4 percent. Only 10 percent attend church regularly. Many churches are closing due to aging congregations and shrinking attendance, and many church buildings are now being used by minority communities. Let us pray that believers will stand firm against secularism and pluralism, holding to the gospel of the cross and boldly proclaiming the truth. May true reformation and revival come to the churches of Australia. May Australia no longer be seen as a forsaken land or a spiritual desert, but be renewed by the gospel and become a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord.
2. It has been more than 130 years since Australian missionaries brought the gospel to Korea in 1889. But today, many churches have lost their passion for missions. In 2010, around 3,800 missionaries were sent out, but that number has been decreasing. Movements like the U.S. Center for World Mission (USCWM) and Kairos, a discipleship program for students, are now helping to rekindle mission vision. Let us pray for training that equips people to actively engage in world evangelization. May churches and mission organizations rise up again, becoming instruments through which righteousness shines like the dawn and salvation blazes like a torch, both in Australia and among the nations.
3. Let us pray for the next generation in Australia. Christian schools are growing, but Sunday school attendance is sharply declining. Let us pray that churches will share the gospel and disciple children, teenagers, and students. Organizations like Christian schools, YFC, the Crusader Movement, and God Squad are actively reaching young people. Let us pray that churches and mission workers unite to raise a generation that dies to the world—its pleasures, wealth, and leisure—and lives by the Word. May the Lord bring salvation and restoration to the youth of Australia and rejoice over them like a groom rejoices over his bride.
