“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
Brazil has become the world’s second-largest missionary-sending nation, with 38,000 missionaries, following only the United States, according to CBN News. What stands out is their creative models of mission, especially self-supporting approaches.
From Belo Horizonte, Daniele Silva runs cafés in Asia and the Middle East, using business as a way to build relationships and share the love of Christ where traditional missionaries are not welcome. Marcelo Crivella, an evangelical pastor-turned-politician with past experience in Africa, noted that the diversity and openness of Brazilians give them unique strength in the mission field.
Breno Vieitas of the Last Call mission group, who served in Mozambique and Spain, advocates for “tentmaking” missions that do not rely only on donations. “I have faced financial challenges while serving with local missionaries, but now I see the need for a model where we combine jobs and ministry. This makes missions more sustainable and effective,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Rebecca Teixeira travels across Europe encouraging young believers, starting her work in Portugal. She said, “Europe is not dead. This is only the beginning. We look for opportunities where God is at work and focus on raising young leaders. South American missionaries are less concerned with quick results and more focused on leaving a spiritual legacy that continues for generations.”
A powerful moment came in 2020 at The Send rally in Brazil, where 140,000 young people filled three stadiums and 2 million joined online. Tens of thousands lifted their shoes in a symbolic pledge to “go with the gospel.” Teixeira explained, “Missions happen through the hands of those who give, the knees of those who pray, and the feet of those who go.”
Today, Brazilian missionaries serve worldwide in hospitals, schools, aid work, and church planting—often working jobs while serving in ministry. Dr. Todd Johnson of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary observed, “Brazilians are sharing the gospel in some of the hardest places, using many different ways. It’s an amazing story that most people still don’t know.” (Source: Gospel Prayer Newspaper, Edited Version)
For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:13-15)
God, thank You for using the openness of Brazilians, who live together with many races and peoples, to send out beautiful feet that obey the Great Commission in their daily lives. Pour out Your heart on those who embrace souls and share the gospel with open hearts, so that no matter what difficulties they face, they will not give up but boldly proclaim the truth. Through the obedience of the church, let Your kingdom spread beyond Brazil to every nation, and may all who call on the name of the Lord be saved and become a people preparing the way for Your return.
