[Spain] Jerez City Celebrates Day of the Bible and the Protestant Reformation

“You have the words of eternal life.”

The city of Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain officially celebrated “Bible Day” and the “Protestant Reformation Day” in an institutional ceremony held at the Town Hall, together with the Fraternity of Evangelical Churches of Jerez, Evangelical Focus reported on the 4th. This commemoration marked the first official event since the Andalusian Regional Government designated October 31 as “Bible Day” in 2024.

Last year’s celebration was cancelled due to the national emergency caused by the DANA floods. This year, however, the event was held one day earlier than planned due to the schedule of Mayor María José García-Pelayo. The day began with the placement of a banner reading “Bible Day and Protestant Reformation Day” on the municipal balcony as a public and institutional gesture of recognition.

Following this, municipal authorities and representatives of the evangelical churches gathered in the Noble Hall of the Town Hall for a joint ceremony. Antonio Bonilla, president of the Fraternity of Evangelical Churches of Jerez, delivered a welcome address, expressing gratitude to the municipal corporation “for allowing us to officially celebrate this day, whose purpose is to glorify God and His Word.”

Pastor Manuel Guerrero Corpas then spoke, describing the Bible as “the sacred library” and urging people to “follow its principles and teachings in order to gain true wisdom.” Guerrero also provided a historical overview of the Protestant Reformation and its connection to Jerez. He commemorated María de Bohórquez, a 16th-century guardian of the Scriptures and martyr, and Joseph Viliesid, who led the effort to build the city’s first evangelical church.

Mayor María José García-Pelayo, who presided over the ceremony, stated, “The Bible is possibly the most widely read and most important book in human history. It offers sound wisdom and guidance not only to believers, but also to those who do not believe.”

She expressed appreciation for the prayers and words of encouragement received from the Fraternity of Evangelical Churches, emphasizing, “We must never give up or think that everything has already been accomplished. The citizens of Jerez deserve a better city.” She added that “the social and spiritual work carried out by the evangelical churches of Jerez is strengthening our city,” and concluded, “The city government is honoured by this collaboration.” (Source: Gospel Prayer News, Edited Version).

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. (John 6:68)

God, thank You for the official event in Spain that commemorated Bible Day and the Protestant Reformation, bringing the souls of the nation and the city before the Lord, the Word of Eternal Life. Through this celebration, we pray that the citizens of Jerez will draw closer to the Scriptures, which hold true wisdom leading to salvation, and that they will walk according to the teachings of the Lord. May the legacy of faith be faithfully passed down to the next generation. We pray that the churches of Spain, firmly established in the gospel and in prayer, will boldly proclaim the love of the cross, the truth that has been revealed as life, so that the glorious name of the LORD may be known among all people, and that many may receive the salvation that leads to life.
