》 About Argentina
Argentina was colonized by Spain in 1580 and gained independence in 1816. From 1860 to 1930, the country grew quickly due to farming and ranching, attracting many immigrants from Italy and Spain. Throughout the 20th century, there were conflicts between civilian and military groups. After World War II, President Juan Perón tried a socialist government, which ended unsuccessfully. In 1976, the military took control, but their government was weak. In 1983, they failed to seize the Falkland Islands from the U.K., leading to a return to democracy. However, isolationist policies between 2003 and 2015 caused economic problems. Alberto Fernández was elected in 2019, followed by Javier Milei in 2023.
Argentina once was among the world’s wealthiest countries around 1900, largely due to its strong agricultural exports, especially livestock and crops. However, economic crises, inflation, foreign debt, and capital outflow have been recurring issues over the last century. Agriculture is still a key export sector, and Argentina leads South America in natural gas production. The country also has rich mineral resources, ranking sixth in global reserves for minerals like gold, silver, zinc, and lithium. In 2019, Argentina turned to the IMF for financial support, facing a debt crisis that continues to impact its economy. Recovery has also been slow due to the effects of COVID-19 on production and consumption. Argentina’s GDP per capita is approximately $19,700.
》 Scripture Focus
Acts 3:1-8,16(NIV) 2. Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5. So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6. Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7. Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 16. By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. |
》 Prayer Points
1. Argentina has a Christian population of about 93%, most of whom are Catholic, while 6% identify as Protestant. Evangelical Christians make up over 11% of the population, and their numbers continue to grow, which is seen as a positive development. However, the influence of Umbanda mysticism from Brazil, Mormonism, Islam, and spiritism have also increased significantly. Let’s pray that churches stand firm in the gospel, overcoming these influences through prayer and spiritual strength. May faith in Jesus bring Argentina complete healing.
2. The Argentine branch of the World Mission Network (Cooperación Misionera Iberoamericana, COMIBAM) helps churches unite in mission work, training, sending, and funding missionaries. The Training Center (Centro de Entrenamiento) plays a key role in gathering believers for missions. However, for missions to grow, churches need strong discipleship programs rooted firmly in the Scripture. Let’s pray for more workers, who can distinguish the word of truth through seminaries, Bible schools, and TEE programs, to be trained and sent. May churches have a passion for other souls, empowered to proclaim the gospel, saying, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have, I give you.”
3. In the Chaco region, Native American groups (such as the Wichi, Toba, Chorote, and Guarani) suffer from exploitation, poverty, and hardship. Many others, including the Quechua and Aymara from neighboring countries, live as laborers, and millions of undocumented immigrants are in extreme poverty. Argentina has also accepted Syrian refugees, and many Muslims from Palestine and Türkiye have come here. Let’s pray for the gospel to reach these diverse groups and nations, so that, unlike those once begging at the temple gate, they will experience the joy of salvation and praise God in the temple.
