》 About Canada
Canada was first discovered by the British in 1497 with the finding of Newfoundland. In 1553, the French arrived, sparking disputes over territorial expansion between Britain and France. Following the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), Britain emerged victorious, gaining full control. In 1867, Canada was recognized as British territory and later became an independent member of the British Commonwealth in 1931, officially adopting the name “Canada” in 1951. In 1982, the country proclaimed its own independent constitution, solidifying its status as a sovereign state. As the country is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, King Charles III of the United Kingdom serves as the Head of State, while the cabinet, formed by the majority party in the House of Commons, holds actual executive power led by the Prime Minister. Justin Trudeau has served as Prime Minister since 2015 and was re-elected in 2019.
Canada’s economy shares similarities with that of the U.S in its market-driven structure, production patterns, and high living standards. It ranks among the world’s top industrialized nations and is renowned for its vast land, rich with natural resources and prominent agricultural and forestry sectors. Due to significant growth in manufacturing, mining, and service sectors, Canada has shifted from a predominantly rural economy to an urban and industrial one. The country holds the third-largest oil reserves globally, following Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, and is the seventh-largest oil producer. However, the economy faced setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a decline in trade with its largest partners, the U.S. and China. Canada’s GDP per capita is approximately $45.900
》 Scripture Focus
Habakkuk 2:1-4, 14-18(NIV) 1 I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. Then the LORD replied: 2 “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. 3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. 4 “See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright—but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness.” 14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. 15 Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies. 16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn! Drink and be exposed! The cup from the LORD’s right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory. 17 The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and your destruction of animals will terrify you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them. 18 Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies? For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak. |
》 Prayer Points
1. Christianity in Canada has declined due to pluralism and secularism, and the church has lost its moral compass, causing the influence of the gospel to diminish. Evangelicals now make up less than 8% of the population, and terms like “being born again,” “evangelicalism,” and “spirituality” have become causes for discomfort.
However, with the increase in diversity of races, cultures, and languages through immigrant communities, the church is gaining new vitality through the gospel. Let’s pray that the churches unite through the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada and return to the Word of truth. Pray that they would acknowledge and believe in the authority of the Word clearly written in the Scriptures. Pray for those who have strayed from the truth to know the glory of the Lord, stand firm in the faith, and believe only in the Bible.
2. The vision for the mission was once very strong, with many churches sending missionaries since the 19th century. However, over the past 20 years, the number of missionaries sent has sharply decreased. Nevertheless, thanks to programs like the Task Force for Global Mission, missionary training, relief work, and ministries for rebuilding continue.
Quebec, a French-speaking province, is still heavily influenced by French culture. Over 80% of the population is Catholic, but church attendance is very low. Christian Direction is working with churches to engage in global French-speaking missions from Quebec. Let’s pray that Canadian churches recognize that these are the last days before the Lord’s return. Let’s pray that they would rise up as witnesses of the gospel of grace, which justifies us through faith in the cross,. Pray that they obediently work towards the completion of mission.
3. Canada’s indigenous people groups and the Inuit (Eskimos) number around 1.67 million, with more than 80,000 Inuit. They faced abuse during colonization and were forced into residential schools aimed at assimilating them into European culture, causing immense cultural, mental, and physical damage. Even today, they suffer from political, cultural, social isolation, and inequality, as well as poverty, alcoholism, and drug addiction. Most of them are nominal Christians.
However, there have been positive changes through organizations like the Evangelical Fellowship of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, Interact, and Inter-Mission Cooperative Outreach, leading to growth and reviving positive change.
Canada is a multicultural and multi-ethnic nation, receiving the highest number of immigrants and refugees in the world. It is home to ethnic groups from 185 countries and more than 162 minority groups. More than 450 million people, including Chinese (1.26 million), South Asians (1 million), and Muslims from Arab, Asian, and African countries (1.1 million), continue to increase.
Let’s pray that Canadian churches and mission organizations can bring reconciliation and love to the indigenous and Inuit peoples, demonstrating God’s glory. Also, may they reach out to immigrants and refugees from various nations and tribes, comforting and helping them, preaching the gospel of the cross so they can receive hope and salvation.
