“The Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before Mexico!”

For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. (Isaiah 61:11,NIV)

》 About Mexico

Mexico is still fighting a long battle against drug cartels. The drug problem is not just about crime—it is deeply connected to politics, the economy, and society. Corruption is widespread, with many cases of cartels working closely with government officials, police, and even the military. Since 2006, drug-related violence has killed at least 300,000 people, and many more have gone missing. In some areas, cartels hold more power than the government, controlling local communities and their economies. The drug trade has become a part of everyday life. Despite this, Protestant evangelical churches are making a difference. These churches have a strong influence, especially in poor neighborhoods and indigenous communities, helping people escape drugs and crime. They not only provide spiritual guidance but also offer practical support to those looking for a way out. However, this change is not easy. Cartels see churches as a threat, and some pastors and church leaders who stand up to them have been kidnapped or even killed. Yet, evangelical churches are growing, and the communities they build are becoming a sign of hope in places once ruled by drug violence. They offer a way out of fear and a chance for a new future.

Mexico’s economy became the 11th largest in the world after the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. The economy is driven primarily by manufacturing, oil, and related industries. However, the country faces significant challenges, including severe inequality, widespread corruption, and the fact that 40% of the population lives in poverty. The drug trade, controlled by powerful cartels, also remains a major issue. The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted key industries such as automotive, construction, mining, and tourism. Given that 80% of Mexico’s exports go to the U.S., there are concerns about a long-term economic recession due to the U.S. economic downturn.
Mexico’s GDP per capita is approximately $13,926.

》 Scripture Focus

Isaiah 61:7-11(NIV)
7. Instead of their shame my people will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace they will rejoice in their inheritance; and so they will inherit a double portion in their land, and everlasting joy will be theirs.
8. “For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and iniquity. In my faithfulness I will reward them and make an everlasting covenant with them.
9. Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the LORD has blessed.”
10. I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.

》 Prayer Points

1. Mexico is facing extreme violence due to the ongoing war against drug cartels. The murder rate has risen sharply, with about 91 killings happening every day. Since the government began using the military and police to fight the cartels in 2006, over 200,000 people have been killed. But the problem is not just the cartels—corrupt officials and weak law enforcement also play a role. Drug trafficking is a huge industry in Mexico, and many people rely on it for their survival, making it difficult to stop. Currently, over 500,000 people in Mexico are addicted to drugs, and many lives are being destroyed. Let us pray for an end to the power of darkness in this land. May cartel members recognize God’s justice, repent, and turn back. Let us ask God to comfort those living in fear and bring peace and righteousness to Mexico. We also pray that those struggling with addiction will find freedom in the gospel and that the church will remain faithful and pure, preparing to meet Christ.

2. In some parts of Mexico, Christians who do not follow traditional tribal beliefs (a mix of Catholicism and indigenous religions) face persecution. Local governments fine or even expel those who convert to Protestantism. Drug cartels also see churches as a threat and have attacked them. Churches in Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Guerrero suffer from discrimination, harassment, property seizures, and even life-threatening dangers. Let us pray for these persecuted churches, that they will remain strong in faith and trust in God, who loves justice. May they stand firm in the gospel, knowing His grace and power. Let us also pray for the persecutors, that their hearts will change and they will come to know the love of Christ.

3. Half of Mexico’s children and teenagers live in poverty, and many suffer from violence at home and in school. Many drop out of school to help their families and end up working in harsh conditions like mines, garbage dumps, construction sites, and even nightclubs—places unsafe for minors. Crimes against children are also widespread. Every day, four children and teenagers are murdered, and two out of ten missing persons are minors. Let us pray that the gospel will reach Mexico’s young generation so they can rise as a holy generation that brings change. We also pray that the church will reach out with love and care to those in desperate need. May the Lord bring justice and hope to Mexico.
