》 About Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and became a Spanish colony. In 1623, the British took over and renamed it Saint Kitts. In 1627, French settlers arrived, sparking over 100 years of conflict between Britain and France. The Treaty of Versailles in 1783 officially recognized Saint Kitts and Nevis as British territory. During the independence process, the island of Anguilla revolted, eventually separating in 1971. In 1983, the islands gained independence as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, later changing the name to Saint Kitts and Nevis in 1988. It remains a Commonwealth country, and Timothy Harris has served as Prime Minister since 2015.

The economy once relied heavily on the sugar industry, which no longer exists due to thebut with plummeting sugar prices, this industry has closed entirely. The focus has since shifted to tourism, export manufacturing, and offshore financial services (as a tax haven). However, the economy remains vulnerable to natural disasters and changes in tourism demand. Saint Kitts and Nevis’ GDP per capita is approximately $23,300.

》 Scripture Focus

Isaiah 41:1-7,NIV
1 “Be silent before me, you islands!  Let the nations renew their strength!
Let them come forward and speak; let us meet together at the place of judgment.
2 “Who has stirred up one from the east, calling him in righteousness to his service[a]? He hands nations over to him and subdues kings before him.
He turns them to dust with his sword, to windblown chaff with his bow.
3 He pursues them and moves on unscathed, by a path his feet have not traveled before.
4 Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord—with the first of them and with the last—I am he.”
5 The islands have seen it and fear; the ends of the earth tremble.
They approach and come forward;
6 they help each other and say to their companions, “Be strong!”
7 The metalworker encourages the goldsmith, and the one who smooths with the hammer spurs on the one who strikes the anvil.
One says of the welding, “It is good.” The other nails down the idol so it will not topple.

》 Prayer Points

1. Saint Kitts and Nevis earns tens of millions of dollars annually from its offshore financial sector, attracting wealthy individuals and even criminals who buy citizenship. This financial influx has led to a secular and extremely materialistic culture, causing moral decline and turning the nation into a haven for crime. The thriving tourism industry has also brought a rise in indulgence and reckless behavior. As a result, nearly half of households are led by single women, and teenage births account for 20% of all births.
The majority of churches belong to Protestant denominations, including Anglican, Methodist, and Moravian, with about 22% of the population identifying as evangelical. However, secularism has lessened the church’s influence. The Evangelical Association and Youth Impact Ministries work together to unite and support churches in ministry. Let us pray that the Lord awakens these churches with the message of the cross, calling them into righteousness and reverence, so this nation may be renewed in reverenceHis presence.

》 Country Profile

Montserrat was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named after the Montserrat Monastery in Spain. In 1632, British and Irish settlers established the first colony, bringing enslaved people from Africa to the island. Britain and France fought over the territory in the 18th century, and by 1783, Montserrat was fully under British control. As a British overseas territory, the UK oversees defense, foreign relations, police, administration, and budgeting.

The economy faced a severe blow after a volcanic eruption in 1997 left half of the island uninhabitable. Today, tourism around the volcano and light industries form the economic backbone, with vital financial aid from the UK, EU, and other countries. Montserrat’s industries include agriculture (fruits like limes, vegetables, and cotton), as well as the production of swimsuits, plastic bags, and electronic parts. In 2013, the EU granted $55.2 million to support public financial management and economic reform, aiming to help the country recover and build economic resilience. Montserrat’s GDP per capita is approximately $34,000.

》 Prayer Points

1. Montserrat was colonized by the British, leading to the spread of Christianity through Anglican and Catholic churches. Today, Protestant Christians make up a larger portion of the population, with 37% identifying as Protestants and 28% as Evangelicals. Since the 1995 eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, half the island has become uninhabitable. Before the eruption, Montserrat had a population of around 12,000, but many residents emigrated, leaving the current population at less than half of that.

Let’s pray that Montserrat’s churches may be filled with the gospel and find strength through prayer to aid in the country’s restoration in the face of natural disasters and various challenges. Pray for the country to come forward in silence and renew their strength and receive salvation rom God.
