[Brazil] Bridge Collapse in Brazil Leaves Over 10 Dead or Missing… Chemical Spill in River

“ Call to the Lord in your trouble; cry out to him .”

On the 22nd (local time), a bridge collapse in northeastern Brazil resulted in four deaths and at least 13 missing persons, while large quantities of sulfuric acid and pesticides spilled into the river, complicating search efforts. According to a report by Brazil’s state news agency cited by CNN on the 24th, four trucks, three passenger cars, and three motorcycles fell into the Tocantins River during the collapse.

The trucks were transporting 25,000 liters of pesticides and 76 tons of sulfuric acid. It remains unclear whether the hazardous chemicals are currently leaking or if the containers remain sealed, as detailed water quality analysis has yet to be completed. Brazil’s water quality authorities have issued warnings against drinking or entering the river.

The Maranhão fire department has prepared 25 divers for an underwater search, but due to the potential risk of chemical leaks, no underwater operations are currently being conducted. The collapse occurred on the “Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira” bridge, named after a former Brazilian president, on the afternoon of the 22nd.

Constructed in the 1960s, the bridge spans 533 meters across the Tocantins River, connecting Estreito in Maranhão state and Agiarnopolis in Tocantins state. So far, the bodies of one man and three women have been recovered, and one male survivor was rescued on the day of the incident.

Photos from the scene reveal exposed concrete and rebar, resembling the aftermath of Seoul’s Seongsu Bridge collapse on October 21, 1994. Allegations of a “man-made disaster” are likely to emerge, as visible cracks on the bridge were reported prior to the collapse, yet no preventative measures were taken.

On the 21st, a day before the accident, a local resident released a video online highlighting visible cracks on the bridge and warning of its imminent collapse, AFP reported (Source: Yonhap News).

In my distress I called to the LORD;  I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.(Psalms 18:6)

God, we bring before You the tragedy in Brazil, where the bridge collapse could have been prevented if cracks detected earlier had been addressed, but due to insufficient response, a devastating disaster occurred. We ask for Your protection against a greater catastrophe from the potential leak of hazardous substances and for Your safeguarding of the lives of the missing, even in a situation where underwater searches are not possible. Grant comfort and grace to the bereaved families and all who are observing this incident, that they may hear the living Word of God and turn to Christ on the cross, who saves us from the disaster of the soul. Let the Brazilian church cry out to Jehovah, who answers in times of tribulation, and may their prayers rise to heaven and bring forth the answer of salvation for many souls.
