“These things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things”
[May.22.2022] Over 100 cases of Monkeypox, a viral infection more common in Africa, have been confirmed in countries such as the United Kingdom Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, France, Germany, etc., Reuters reported on May 20 (local time).
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said it has detected 11 additional cases of Monkeypox in England, which takes the total number of the cases to 20. They expect that this increase will continue in the coming days and for more cases to be identified in the wider community.
Among the recently confirmed cases of Monkeypox in the UK and Europe, a notable proportion of cases have been found in gay and bisexual men, the UK health authority explained. In Spain, the number of people infected with Monkeypox, mainly in Madrid, increased by nine, bringing the total to 30, health officials said.
Most cases of the confirmed cases are believed to use the same sauna which refers to a facility preferred by gay men, not a general public bath. Madrid’s health authorities explained that they are tracking the movement of patients so that they can break the chain of transmission.
Portugal’s 14 cases were all detected in sexual health clinics and were either gay, bisexual or men who have sex with men.
Alessio D’Amato, health commissioner of the Lazio region in Italy said that it was too early to say if the illness has morphed into a sexually transmitted disease. Three cases have been reported so far in the country. Stuart Neil, professor of virology at Kings Collage London said, “The idea that there’s some sort of sexual transmission in this, it is a little bit of a stretch.”
“This is the largest and most widespread outbreak of Monkeypox ever seen in Europe,” said Germany’s medical service, which detected its first case in the country on that day.
Earlier, Monkeypox was identified in a 29-year-old man in the Ile-de-France region, which includes Paris, the French Health Ministry said. In Belgium, 2 people who attended the same party that day were confirmed for Monkeypox, local media reported.
Monkeypox, which shows symptoms such as fever, headache, and rash, typically spreads through close contact with an infected patient. However, it does not spread as easily as Covid-19.
According to the WHO, there is no specific vaccine for Monkeypox, but data shows that the vaccines used to eradicate smallpox are up to 85% effective against Monkeypox. The WHO is convening an emergency meeting to discuss the smallpox vaccine, the British Telegraph reported(Source: YeanHap News Edited).
Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did-and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(1 Corinthians 10:6,8)
Dear God, please stop the spread of the Monkeypox virus across Europe. We pray that health authorities in each country will clarify the cause so that the European community is alert and does not become a fan of evil by taking this as an example. We pray for the souls of this earth that the church will pray and preach the gospel so that they can turn from evil deeds and exalt the LORD through holy worship.
