Gangsters attacked a prison in Haiti, a Caribbean island country suffering from severe security failures, causing thousands of people to escape and at least 10 deaths, AFP reported on the 3rd (local time).
Citing local non-governmental organisation (NGO) officials, AFP reported that gangsters attacked the national prison in the capital, Port-au-Prince, the night before, and that of the estimated 3,800 inmates, only about 100 remain.
AFP news agency explained the local situation by saying that its correspondent who visited the national prison identified about 10 bodies, and that the prison door was open and there were hardly any people inside.
The Haitian government also announced in a statement that police attempted to repel gangs that attacked the national prison and other facilities and that several people, including prison staff and inmates, were injured in the process.
Local media outlet Le Nouvelist reported that famous gang leaders and the assassins of President Jovenel Moïse were imprisoned in the attacked national prison. The media added that the gangs had scouted the situation inside the prison using drones since the 29th of last month before the prison attack.
It is known that the mastermind behind this violence is Jimmy Cherizier, nicknamed ‘Barbicue’, the leader of ‘G9’’- a gang association in the Port-au-Prince area. On the 1st, he also called on the military and police to arrest Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
Haiti, considered one of the poorest countries in the Americas, has been experiencing extreme chaos since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Administrative functions are virtually paralysed amid deteriorating security due to gang violence, severe fuel shortages, soaring prices, and a cholera outbreak.
In January of last year, the term of office of the country’s last 10 senators, the last elected officials, ended, creating a vacuum in the legislative branch. In addition, on the 8th of last month, Prime Minister Henry refused to step down, leading to fierce anti-government protests, and gangs are committing various crimes in the process. God, may You have mercy on Haiti, which is facing extreme chaos and greater difficulties due to another serious crime incident. May You silence the evil power that promotes chaos in Haiti and bring order and justice to the place through Your righteous reign. We confess that the only answer to this land is the gospel of the cross. Please show Your grace to the Haiti people, speak to them through Your living and active Word so that they will be transformed, and become the citizens of Your holy kingdom; filled with the knowledge of You and uplifting the glorious banner of the cross and glorify Your name.
