“I will teach you the fear of the LORD.”
Debates over bioethics are spreading internationally as issues related to euthanasia and assisted suicide gain attention in Canada, Belgium, and Scotland.
In Canada, many were shocked when it was revealed that Afghanistan war veteran David Balcher, who was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, was offered euthanasia instead of medical treatment. A government official reportedly told him, “You’ve already tried many treatments. Why not consider Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID)?” Balcher said it was the lowest point in his life and felt like the government was encouraging him to die. Another veteran, Mark Meinke, claimed that at least five others had similar experiences and is calling for a full reform of veterans’ policies.
In Belgium, lawmakers are debating a bill that would allow euthanasia for patients with dementia. The law would permit euthanasia based on a written directive made while the person was still mentally capable, even if they later lose the ability to consent. This would greatly expand Belgium’s current euthanasia law to include dementia patients.
Supporters of the bill say it protects personal choice and dignity, but others raise serious ethical concerns. Neurologist Eric Salmon said that people with dementia can still feel love and have meaningful experiences. The Austrian think tank IMABE criticized the bill, saying it treats dementia patients like “vegetables” and puts cost-saving ahead of care, which could pressure the elderly into choosing death.
In Scotland, a bill to legalize assisted suicide for terminally ill patients is about to be voted on. Pro-life groups are strongly opposed. Right to Life UK warned that if passed, the law could pressure vulnerable people like the elderly and disabled to choose assisted suicide.
There are also reports that assisted suicide does not always lead to a peaceful death. In response, Right to Life UK launched a “Support Not Suicide” campaign and is encouraging citizens to contact their local lawmakers to express their concerns and oppose the bill.(Source: Gospel Prayer Newspaper Edited)
Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. (Psalms 34:11-12,14,NIV)
God, we come before You with sorrowful hearts as we hear that those entrusted with protecting life are proposing laws that promote suicide under the name of human dignity. Reveal to them the gospel of the cross, that they may turn from evil, return to You, and acknowledge that the authority over life belongs to God alone. Raise up the Church of Jesus across the nations to boldly proclaim that true autonomy and dignity are only found in the fear of the LORD. May the nations learn to cherish the life given by You, honor one another in Christ, and pursue peace under Your rule.
