“I will praise the name of the Lord, he rules the world in righteousness”
[Jun.25.2022] On the 24th (local time), the U.S. Supreme Court officially scrapped the so-called “Roe v. Wade” ruling that legalized women’s abortions up to six months into pregnancy. As the constitutional right for abortion is not recognized, the decision to retain the right to abortion is transferred to the authority of each state government and Congress.
As a result, U.S. media criticize that abortion rights, which have been guaranteed at the federal level for about 50 years, have retreated significantly, and major confusion is expected as the debate over abortion intensifies ahead of the November midterm elections.
“There is no mention of abortion in the Constitution and such rights are not protected by any provision under the Constitution,” said Justice Samuel in a majority opinion. “There are provisions that protect rights that are not mentioned in the Constitution, but those rights should be based on the history and traditions of this country and should be embedded in the concept of orderly freedom,” he said.
In January 1973, in the “Roe v. Wade” hearing, the Supreme Court ruled in 7:2 that women’s right to abortion constitutes the right to protect privacy under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. At the same time, it was ruled that women could decide to stop pregnancy for any reason until the time when the fetus could survive on its own outside the womb (about 28 weeks of pregnancy).
However, the ruling was overturned after the Supreme Court began hearing a Mississippi law banning almost all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy last year.
Three progressive Supreme Court justices who expressed opposition to the ruling said, “I oppose it in sorrow for millions of American women who have lost fundamental constitutional protection.”
As the U.S. Supreme Court has decided that abortion rights are not constitutionally guaranteed rights, legislation and policy implementation on abortion issues are expected to accelerate by state. Currently, more than half of all 50 states are expected to ban or strictly restrict abortion.
In his press speech to the public, President Joe Biden criticized that “The Supreme Court has returned the United States 150 years back” and added, “It is a sad day for the state and courts.” President Joe Biden is reportedly considering executive orders in response to the ruling.
It is known to include measures that facilitate the purchase of abortion drugs or enable abortion procedures in other states. However, there is no way to count directly to the Supreme Court’s ruling.
In front of the Supreme Court, both anti-abortion groups cheering the decision, and protesters in favor of guaranteeing abortion rights were caught on cameras. The Supreme Court installed fences and barricades around the building last month to prepare for emergent cases(Source: Yonhap News Agency).
I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity. Arise, LORD, do not let mortals triumph; let the nations be judged in your presence. (Psalm 9:2,8.19)
God, thank You for ruling the people with the righteousness and honesty of the Lord, and for officially abolishing the U.S. “Roe v. Wade” ruling, which guaranteed abortions as woman’s rights for 50 years. May You rebuke the president and the people in the authorities who promote public opinion as though the abortion ban is a retreat of the state and freedom and do not let those chasing the lust of the flesh win. Pray that churches in America pray even more diligently that each state will not only ban abortion but also praise the name of the Lord and people who recognizes the sovereignty of life would rise.
