“The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace“
[Mar.07.2023] The President of the Christian country Kenya criticized a recent Supreme Court ruling that allows an activist to register an LGBTQ rights organization, Yonhap News reported, citing the Internet edition of The Standard, local daily news.
At an event held ahead of International Women’s Day on the 8th, President William Ruto said that Kenya is a Christian country and added, “We respect the Supreme Court’s decision, but it does not mean that we must agree. Our values, customs and Christianity do not allow us to support same-sex marriage,” he said. “nor we support gay or lesbian.”
“Kenya has laws governing us,” the president said. “It is not possible for our country Kenya to allow same-sex marriages. … It will happen in other countries but not in Kenya,” he added.
Kenya’s Supreme Court last week ruled that the local NGO Steering Committee was discriminatory for banning gay people from forming groups, and said that even though homosexuality is illegal in Kenya, members of the LGBTQ community still have freedom of association.
In Kenya, Biblical values are upheld and same-sex sexual relations are punishable by up to 14 years in prison, and homosexuality is taboo in many parts of Africa outside of Kenya. (Source: Gospel Prayer Newspaper).
So that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires, but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:4-6)
God, we bless and pray for the President of Kenya, who expresses his disapproval of the Supreme Court’s decision that recognizes gay rights, and boldly calls homosexuality a sin. May he continuously walk according to the values of heaven so that the stream of life flows to the people of the nation to live following the spirit and not by flesh. May You rebuke those who try to defend homosexuality by law in the Christian nation. May You shine the light of the gospel on them so that they may walk the way that gives life.
